Get fit / Keep fit / Weightlifting
I have included this section because I intend to start
training again to get fit and hopefully keep fit (I need to lose weight).
I last lifted any weights in anger about 15 years ago and I've gotten
sloppy (and flabby) in the mean time.
They say the hardest part about going to the gym is putting your shoes on
in the first place - its a mental thing.
Over the years I have met some great guys in the gym including :-
Suresh (Sid) Patel - my long time training partner and ace power-lifter
Danny Duffy - the guy who introduced me to weights in the first place
Mick O'Rielly - an inspiration (for his age this guy is in shape)
Eric Cummins - he could bench-press more than I could squat!
Alan Duffy, Billy Miller, Gordon Ross and Mick Joyce were always in
the gym ready to spot you if needed and ready to shout encouragement at the
right time.
For the record, I trained primarily with power-lifters and my best lifts
(to strict competition standard and when I was 140lbs) in the three disciplines
are :-
260lbs+ Bench-Press
480lbs+ Deadlift
400lbs+ Squat
(Sid at 132lbs could deadlift over 500lbs and squat over 440lbs)
I could also exceed 4ft with a standing jump. My favourite exercise, however,
was skipping 'cos it didn't hurt :-)
My biggest regret was never quite managing to lift two-times body weight
(or indeed 300lb) at bench-press ... sigh
