LaserDisc Collection:
(updated March 4th 1999)
- "The Abyss" Special
Edition. (NTSC) widescreen
This 3-disk set includes "The Making of The Abyss", and a set of
behind-the-scenes stills, and information on the changes made to
the movie after its release at the cinema.
- "Addams Family
Values" (PAL) widescreen
Funnier than the original - well I liked it
anyway! Written by Paul Rudnick, and choc-a-block with marvelous
one-liners.
- "Aladdin" (NTSC)
widescreen
The Disney cartoon starring Robin Williams -
wonderful!
- "Beauty and the
Beast" (NTSC) widescreen
The Disney cartoon with its wonderful music and excellent
animation, and the bit near the end that makes you want to
cry...
- "Kate Bush: The Whole
Story" (PAL)
This has been updated with the inclusion of some material from
1993. OK, own up all those people who used to sing along with Kate
when she sang "Wuthering Heights"...
- "The Day the Earth Stood Still"
(PAL)
Black and White fullscreen edition of the classic 50's scifi movie with
the flying saucer and the big robot. Whatever you do don't forget the
message "Klaatu barada nikto" or there'll be trouble!
- "Doctor Who: The Brain of
Morbius" (PAL)
An original LaserVision disk from the BBC. Starring Tom Baker (who
I reckon was the best Doctor so there!) It's also
quite a good story, and features "The Sisterhood of Karn" who
worship a holy flame...
- "Doctor Who: The Day of the
Daleks" (PAL)
A story featuring Jon Pertwee. People from the future come back to
the 1970's to sabotage a UN meeting in order to alter a future where
the Daleks have taken over the Earth.
- "Doctor Who: The Ark in Space"
(PAL)
Tom Baker as the doctor and Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith end up
on a space station containing the cryogenically frozen remnants of the
human race. Unfortunately, something nasty got there before they did...
- "Doctor Who: Terror of the Zygons"
(PAL)
Tom Baker as the doctor in a story set in Scotland where funny things are
happening at Loch Ness, and one or two people aren't quite what they seem...
- "Dreamscape"
(PAL)
The quality of this disk wasn't amazing - then again it only cost
£10! It's an interesting SciFi movie about someone who
invents a system for entering other people's dreams, and
manipulating the results.
- "Forbidden
Planet" (NTSC) widescreen
This is a Criterion Collection disk, and includes the original
screen-treatment, stills, deleted scenes, and clips from the
original work-print. This is a classic movie, a SciFi adaptation
of Shakespeare's "The Tempest".
- "Groundhog Day"
(PAL) widescreen
This is an excellent comedy about a man who relives the same
day over and over.
- "Independence
Day" (PAL) widescreen
This is the much hyped SciFi movie about an alien attack on
the Earth. The quality of the transfer onto LaserDisc is marvelous
(maybe the quality of the script isn't, but who cares - I enjoyed
it anyway!) The surround-sound will knock those ornaments off the
telly. The 2nd side of the 1st disk is in CAV format, so you can
still-frame all those "things exploding" scenes.
- "Jeffrey" (NTSC)
widescreen
This is a wonderfully funny film starring Patrick Stewart in a gay
role ("Make it Camp" rather than "Make it so") It's the story of
Jeffrey, who loves sex and yet decides to give it up. Written by
Paul Rudnick who wrote Addams Family Values.
- "Jurassic Park"
(PAL) widescreen
Complete with a digital surround-sound house-shaking soundtrack,
this is a disk to demo a laserdisc system!
- "Kalifornia"
(NTSC) widescreen
A very enjoyable exciting thriller. See David Duchovny as Fox
Mulder (well maybe not, but I kept expecting to see Gillian
Anderson at any moment).
- "Madonna: Blond Ambition World
Tour Live" (PAL)
This particular concert was not released in any other format.
Madonna at her best.
- "Naked Gun 33 and a
third" (PAL) widescreen
Frank Drebin is back - for the third Naked Gun movie. Mostly new
jokes, and specially wackier shaped for easier swallowing
- "The Producers"
(NTSC) widescreen
Another Criterion Collection disk. The movie is in it's original
widescreen ration, and includes the original theatrical trailer.
This is a Mel Brooks movie, starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostell,
about a theatrical producer who comes up with a scam to make money
by having a show that's a failure. Apparently this movie is
responsible for the phrase "If you've got it, flaunt it!".
- "The Rocky Horror Picture Show (special
Edition)"
(PAL) widescreen
A film to make you shiver with antici... ...pation. Excellent
film. Make sure you've got confetti, a water pistol, a newspaper
and some matches handy before you watch it. Whatever happened to
Fay Wray?
- "Speed" (PAL)
widescreen
A disk with a digital surround-sound house-shaking soundtrack.
After watching this you may never want to get on a bus again...
(and you certainly won't want to get in a lift).
- "Star
Trek:Generations" (NTSC) widescreen
Another disk with a digital surround-sound house-shaking
soundtrack. One side of this 2 disk set (the side with the most
amazing of the special effects) is in active play format, so that
you can single-frame through it. I wouldn't be surprised if they
took Troi's driving license away after this.
- "Star Trek:The Next Generation.
The Offspring/Yesterday's Enterprise." (NTSC)
OK, I bought this disk of episodes from the TV series because it
contains 2 of the best episodes. The quality is excellent.
- "Star Wars IV:A New
Hope." (NTSC) widescreen
I thought I'd buy the original version of the trilogy while they
were still available. Marvellous stuff.
- "Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes
Back" (NTSC) widescreen
A lot of people say that this is the best of the three, I'm not
sure. Some excellent scenes in it though!
- "Star Wars VI: Return of the
Jedi" (NTSC) widescreen
Brings this trilogy to a close with a bang.
- "The Shadow"
(PAL) widescreen
Another fun film with excellent surround-sound and visuals. Not
exactly classy viewing but quite enjoyable.
- "True Lies"
(PAL) widescreen
An effects-fest with amazing surround-sound digital soundtrack.
It's a fun movie and is best turned up loud! Arnie doing his usual
stuff.
